How to use the 85 Inch TV Dimensions tool
- Leave “TV size (diagonal)” at 85 in, or type another size. Choose the unit: in, cm, mm or ft.
- Check “Screen shape (width:height)”. It is set to 16:9 by default. You can choose 21:9, 4:3 or 16:10, or pick a custom ratio and fill in “Shape, width part” and “Shape, height part”.
- Read “85 in TV screen, width × height (inches)”, the centimeter row and “Screen area”. At the defaults they show 74.08 × 41.67 in, 188.2 × 105.8 cm and 3,087 in².
- To see the outer size of the set, type a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)”. For example, 0.5 in per side adds a row called “Outer size with your bezel allowance” that reads 75.08 × 42.67 in (190.7 × 108.4 cm). With the default of 0, this row is hidden.
- Open More options and enter “Extra width for stand or cabinet” if you know it. “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” adds that value to the outer width.
- Check “Compared with the previous size”. For 85 in it shows 12.89% more screen area than an 80 in screen.
- Read the viewing-distance table and the mounting-height table. Each source is listed on its own row.
- Compare the calculated size with the published figure shown next to it.
Use a preset for a quick comparison: “85 in, 16:9”, “With 0.5 in bezel”, “21:9, same diagonal”, “4:3, same diagonal” or “Next size up: 98 in”. Presets fill in the controls for you. Before you decide, measure the actual set and the space it will go in.
How is the width and height of an 85 inch TV screen calculated?
The width and height come from the diagonal and the screen shape. For a shape written as a:b, width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²), and height = diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²). This follows from Pythagoras: diagonal² = width² + height².
For 85 in at 16:9, the width is 85 × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = 1,360 ÷ √337, which is 74.08 in. The height is 85 × 9 ÷ √337, which is 41.67 in. Check it: 74.08² + 41.67² is about 7,225, which equals 85². The area is width × height, or 74.08 × 41.67 ≈ 3,087 in², which is 21.44 ft².
Area grows with the square of the diagonal. Compared with an 80 in screen of the same shape, an 85 in screen has 12.89% more area. The same 85 in diagonal gives different sizes in other shapes: 78.13 × 33.48 in for 21:9, and 68 × 51 in for 4:3.
A bezel allowance is added to the outer size. The page adds twice the bezel to the width and to the height. With 0.5 in on each side, 74.08 + 1 = 75.08 in wide and 41.67 + 1 = 42.67 in high.
Why do listed sizes and published figures differ from the screen-only numbers?
The calculated numbers cover only the visible screen. A TV maker’s support page says its listed size excludes the frame, and a retailer’s guide says its figure excludes the bezel, casing and stand. Real sets are larger than the screen, and they differ by maker and model.
A class size can also be slightly smaller than its label. A retailer gives an example of a 55-class screen at about 54.6 in. A published reference says class sizes should be within 1/2 in of the actual size. The page states this in a warning and does not correct for it.
A manufacturer’s approximate table lists 74.5 × 42.6 in for this size, but it does not say how those figures were measured. That differs from the screen-only geometry by about 1 in or less. The page shows both values side by side and does not average them.
Viewing distance and mounting height are given by several sources that disagree. For 85 in, a TV maker’s guide gives 8 ft 6 in and a manufacturer guide gives 8 ft 6 in to 13 ft 6 in, with the 36° row at 9 ft 6 in and the 26° row at 13 ft 4 in. A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide put the screen center about 42 in above the floor, which places this screen between 21.16 in and 62.84 in. Each source is shown on its own row. For scale, the next size up, 98 in, measures 85.41 × 48.05 in.

Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of an 85 inch TV?
At 16:9, the visible screen is 74.08 × 41.67 inches (188.2 × 105.8 cm). The area is about 3,087 square inches. These figures do not include the frame or stand.
Does the 85 inch size include the bezel and stand?
No. The calculated size is the visible screen only. To find the outer size, type a bezel allowance, and add any stand or cabinet width under “More options”.
How far should I sit from an 85 inch TV?
Sources give different ranges, so the page lists each one. A manufacturer guide gives 1.2 to 1.9 times the screen size, which is 8 ft 6 in to 13 ft 6 in (2.59 m to 4.10 m). A TV maker’s guide gives 1.2 times, or 8 ft 6 in. Viewing-angle rows give 8 ft 6 in at 40°, 9 ft 6 in at 36° and 13 ft 4 in at 26°.
How high should I mount an 85 inch TV?
The page shows the screen center height from the floor for each source. At 42 in, a mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide give a bottom edge of 21.16 in and a top edge of 62.84 in. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom.
How much bigger is an 85 inch screen than an 80 inch screen?
An 85 in screen has 12.89% more area than an 80 in screen of the same shape. Area grows with the square of the diagonal, so the increase is larger than the change in diagonal.
How does the published figure compare with the calculation?
A manufacturer’s approximate table lists 74.5 × 42.6 in for this size and does not state its basis. That is 0.42 in wider and 0.93 in taller than the calculated screen, and the page shows both.
