70 Inch TV Dimensions

Type a diagonal (it opens at 70 in) and a screen shape to see the width, height and area of the screen, plus viewing-distance and mounting-height figures from named sources.

This page answers 70 tv dimensions: at a 70 in diagonal in the 16:9 shape, the visible screen measures 61.01 × 34.32 in (155 × 87.17 cm), with an area of 2,094 in² (14.54 ft²). The tool above calculates these numbers from the values you enter, so you can change the diagonal, the screen shape or a bezel allowance. Below the numbers, you will find a viewing-distance table, a mounting-height table and the published figure for this size, with each source kept separate. The results describe the screen only, not whether a set will fit your stand or wall. A real 70 in TV adds a bezel and a stand, and both depend on the maker and model.

How to use the 70 TV Dimensions tool

The page opens at a 70 in diagonal in the 16:9 shape. To check another size or shape:

  1. Set “TV size (diagonal)” to your diagonal, and choose the unit: in, cm, mm or ft.
  2. Set “Screen shape (width:height)”. 16:9 is the default. You can also pick 21:9, 4:3, 16:10, or a custom ratio, then fill in “Shape, width part” and “Shape, height part”.
  3. Read “70 in TV screen, width × height (inches)”, the centimeter row and “Screen area”. At the defaults they show 61.01 × 34.32 in, 155 × 87.17 cm and 2,094 in².
  4. Type a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)” if you want an outer size. At 0.5 in, “Outer size with your bezel allowance” reads 62.01 × 35.32 in (157.5 × 89.71 cm). At 0, that row is not shown.
  5. Open More options and enter “Extra width for stand or cabinet” if your stand or cabinet is wider than the set.
  6. Read “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” as the width to measure against your space.
  7. Check “Compared with the previous size”. For 70 in it shows 15.98% more screen area than a 65 in screen.
  8. Compare the viewing-distance and mounting-height tables, and note which source each row comes from.

The presets save typing. “70 in, 16:9” returns the default. “With 0.5 in bezel” adds a 0.5 in bezel on each side. “21:9, same diagonal” and “4:3, same diagonal” change the shape, and “Next size up: 75 in” moves to the 75 in size, 65.37 × 36.77 in.

How is the width and height of a 70 inch TV calculated?

The diagonal is the straight line from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. For a shape a:b, width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²) and height = diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²). These come from Pythagoras: diagonal² = width² + height².

For 70 in at 16:9, √(16² + 9²) = √337 ≈ 18.36. So the width is 70 × 16 ÷ 18.36 = 61.01 in, and the height is 70 × 9 ÷ 18.36 = 34.32 in. The area is width × height, about 2,094 in² (14.54 ft², 1.351 m²). As a check, 61.01² + 34.32² ≈ 4,900, which is 70².

Area grows with the square of the diagonal. The 70 in screen has 15.98% more area than a 65 in screen of the same shape. The same 70 in diagonal gives 64.34 × 27.57 in in 21:9 and 56 × 42 in in 4:3.

Why do published sizes for a 70 inch TV differ from the calculation?

Published figures can differ from the screen-only calculation, so this page shows each source rather than choosing one. A reference page’s rounded table gives 61.02 × 34.25 in for 16:9, which differs by up to about 1 in from the geometry.

Labels can also be approximate. A “class” size can be slightly smaller than its label. A retailer gives a 55-class screen of about 54.6 in as an example, and a reference page says class sizes should be within 1/2 in of the actual size. This page states the warning but does not correct for it.

The listed size also usually leaves out the frame. A TV maker’s support page says the size excludes the frame or bezel, and a retailer’s listing says it also excludes the casing and stand. A real set therefore takes more room than the screen figure.

Viewing distance and mounting height also vary between sources, so the tables list each one separately without averaging. One commonly quoted table gives 1.0 × the diagonal for a 40° viewing angle. That does not match the geometry for 16:9, so this page does not use it.

Mounting height shows the same split. A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide put the screen center about 42 in above the floor, so this screen would run from 24.84 in to 59.16 in. A retailer’s table lists 67 in for 70 in screens, which is much higher. Both are shown, and neither is averaged. For scale, the 70 in screen is 61.01 × 34.32 in, against 56.65 × 31.87 in for 65 in and 65.37 × 36.77 in for 75 in.

For viewing distance, a TV maker’s guide gives 1.2 times the screen size, which is 7 ft 0 in for 70 in, while a manufacturer guide gives 7 ft 0 in to 11 ft 1 in. The angle rows from a projector maker’s guide (36°) and a third-party calculator (26°) fall at 7 ft 10 in and 11 ft 0 in.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 70 inch measurement include the bezel?

No. The 70 in size and the 61.01 × 34.32 in result describe the visible screen only. To include a bezel, use “Bezel allowance (each side)”, which adds twice the bezel to the width and height.

What viewing distance do the sources give for a 70 inch TV?

Sources differ. A TV maker’s guide gives 1.2 × the screen size, or 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m). A manufacturer guide gives 1.2 to 1.9 ×, or 7 ft 0 in to 11 ft 1 in (2.13 m to 3.38 m). A 40° viewing angle gives 7 ft 0 in, a 36° angle gives 7 ft 10 in (2.38 m), and a 26° angle gives 11 ft 0 in (3.36 m). The 36° and 26° values come from a projector maker’s guide and a third-party calculator.

At what height should a 70 inch TV be mounted?

Sources also differ. A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide put the screen center at 42 in from the floor, which gives a bottom edge of 24.84 in and a top edge of 59.16 in for this screen. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom. A retailer’s table lists 67 in for 70 in screens.

Will a 70 inch TV fit my wall or cabinet?

The tool does not say. The result is calculated from the values you enter, so measure the set and the space yourself. Use “Extra width for stand or cabinet” to add stand width to the “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” figure.

What does a 0.5 in bezel do to the size?

With a 0.5 in bezel on each side, the outer size becomes 62.01 × 35.32 in (157.5 × 89.71 cm). The “With 0.5 in bezel” preset sets this for you.

Why is depth not shown?

Depth is not calculated, because it depends on the model, the stand or wall mount and the connections. Check the depth in the maker’s specifications for your set.

How does a 70 inch screen compare with 75 inches?

The “Next size up: 75 in” preset shows 65.37 × 36.77 in, about 4.36 in wider and 2.45 in taller than the 70 in screen.
