How to use the 60 inch TV dimensions tool
- Set “TV size (diagonal)”. It opens at 60 in, and you can switch the unit to in, cm, mm or ft.
- Choose a “Screen shape (width:height)”. The default is 16:9. You can also pick 21:9, 4:3 or 16:10, or a custom ratio by filling in “Shape, width part” and “Shape, height part”.
- Read the width and height rows, “60 in TV screen, width × height (inches)” and the centimeter row, together with “Screen area”. At the defaults you will see 52.29 × 29.42 in (132.8 × 74.72 cm) and 1,538 in² (10.68 ft²).
- Enter a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)” to add a frame. At 0.5 in, “Outer size with your bezel allowance” reads 53.29 × 30.42 in (135.4 × 77.26 cm). The row only appears when this value is above 0.
- Open More options and enter a number in “Extra width for stand or cabinet”. “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” adds that amount to the outer width. The page does not know your stand, so type the width from your own measurement.
- Check “Compared with the previous size”. For 60 in it reads 19.01% more screen area than a 55 in screen of the same shape.
- Compare the viewing-distance and mounting-height tables. Each source has its own row, and nothing is averaged.
The presets are the quickest way to compare setups: “60 in, 16:9”, “With 0.5 in bezel”, “21:9, same diagonal”, “4:3, same diagonal” and “Next size up: 65 in”. Depth is not calculated, so measure it on your own set.
How are the 60 inch TV dimensions calculated?
A TV’s size is its diagonal, the distance from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. For a screen shape a:b, the width is diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²) and the height is diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²). For a 16:9 screen with a 60 in diagonal, this gives 52.29 in wide and 29.42 in high.
The two sides always satisfy Pythagoras’ rule: diagonal² = width² + height². The area is width × height, which gives 1,538 in² (10.68 ft², 0.9924 m²). Because area depends on the square of the diagonal, a 60 in screen has 19.01% more area than a 55 in screen of the same shape. The same 60 in diagonal in other shapes gives 55.15 × 23.64 in for 21:9 and 48 × 36 in for 4:3.
Why do sources give different sizes for a 60 inch TV?
The calculated figures are for the visible screen only. A TV maker’s support page and a retailer’s table both say the listed size leaves out the frame, and the retailer says it also leaves out the stand. A “class” size can also be a little smaller than its label. The retailer’s example is a 55-class screen of about 54.6 in, and a public reference says class sizes should be within 1/2 in of the actual size. This page states that warning and does not correct for it.
A reference page’s rounded table lists 52.36 × 29.53 in for 16:9. That differs from the screen-only geometry by up to about 1 in. Both figures are shown.
For viewing distance, the sources give different values, and each is listed separately:
- A manufacturer guide: 1.2 to 1.9 × the screen size, or 6 ft 0 in to 9 ft 6 in (1.83 m to 2.90 m).
- A TV maker’s guide: 1.2 ×, or 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m).
- A 40° viewing angle: 6 ft 0 in (1.82 m).
- A 36° viewing angle from a projector maker’s guide: 6 ft 8 in (2.04 m).
- A 26° viewing angle from a third-party calculator: 9 ft 5 in (2.88 m).
The angle rows use D = W ÷ (2 × tan(θ/2)), where W is the screen width. One commonly quoted table gives 1.0 × the diagonal for 40°, which contradicts the geometry for 16:9, so this page does not use it.
Mounting heights also vary. At 42 in (screen center above the floor), the screen runs from 27.29 in to 56.71 in. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom. A retailer’s table gives 56 to 67 in, rising with size, for 43, 55, 65 and 70 in screens.
Next to the neighboring size, the 60 in screen is 4.35 in wider and 2.46 in taller than a 55 in screen of the same shape (47.94 × 26.96 in). The next size up, 65 in, is 56.65 × 31.87 in.

Frequently asked questions
What is the screen width of a 60 inch TV?
For a 16:9 screen, the visible width is 52.29 in (132.8 cm). This is calculated from the diagonal and the screen shape, so it does not include the frame.
What is the screen height of a 60 inch TV?
The visible height is 29.42 in (74.72 cm) for a 16:9 screen. A reference page’s rounded table gives 29.53 in, and both figures are shown on the page.
Does a 60 inch TV size include the bezel?
No. The calculated size is the visible screen only. To add a frame, enter a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)”, and the page adds twice that amount to the width and the height.
What is the screen area of a 60 inch TV?
The 16:9 screen area is 1,538 in², or 10.68 ft² (0.9924 m²). It is the screen width multiplied by the screen height.
How far should you sit from a 60 inch TV?
Sources differ. The page lists 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) from a TV maker’s guide, a range of 6 ft 0 in to 9 ft 6 in from a manufacturer guide, and values from 6 ft 0 in to 9 ft 5 in from the viewing-angle rows. Compare these rows against your own room.
How high do sources put the center of a 60 inch TV?
A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide use 42 in, which gives a bottom edge of 27.29 in and a top edge of 56.71 in for this screen. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom.
Why is my 60 inch TV slightly smaller than 60 inches?
The 60 in figure is the diagonal of the visible screen. A class size can be a little smaller than its label, so check the spec sheet for your model.
