55 Inch TV Dimensions

Type a diagonal (it opens at 55 in) and a screen shape to see the width, height and area of the screen, plus viewing-distance and mounting-height figures from named sources.

The 55 tv dimensions for a 16:9 screen are 47.94 in wide and 26.96 in high (121.8 × 68.49 cm), with a screen area of 1,293 in² (8.976 ft², 0.8339 m²). This tool works those numbers out from a diagonal and a screen shape. You can change either one, add a bezel allowance, or add extra width for a stand. The page also lists viewing-distance and mounting-height figures from named sources, and the published width and height for 55 in next to the calculation. All of it describes the visible screen only. A real set adds a bezel and a stand, and both differ by maker and model, so measure your TV and your space before you buy or mount anything.

How to use the 55 TV dimensions tool

  1. Check that “TV size (diagonal)” shows 55 in. To try another size, type it and choose in, cm, mm or ft.
  2. Leave “Screen shape (width:height)” on 16:9, or pick 21:9, 4:3 or 16:10. For any other ratio, choose Custom ratio and fill in “Shape, width part” and “Shape, height part”.
  3. Read “55 in TV screen, width × height (inches)” and the centimeter row. At the defaults they show 47.94 × 26.96 in and 121.8 × 68.49 cm. “Screen area” shows 1,293 in².
  4. To add the frame, type a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)”, such as 0.5. “Outer size with your bezel allowance” then appears and reads 48.94 × 27.96 in (124.3 × 71.03 cm). At 0 the row stays hidden.
  5. Open More options and type a measured value in “Extra width for stand or cabinet”. “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” adds it to the outer width.
  6. Read “Compared with the previous size”. For 55 in it shows 21% more screen area than a 50 in screen of the same shape.
  7. Scroll to the viewing-distance table, the mounting-height table and the published figures. Each source has its own row, and nothing is averaged.

The presets are shortcuts. “55 in, 16:9” restores the defaults, “With 0.5 in bezel” fills the bezel field, “21:9, same diagonal” and “4:3, same diagonal” change the shape, and “Next size up: 60 in” shows 52.29 × 29.42 in. The result does not say that a TV will fit a space, so measure the set and the space yourself.

How are TV dimensions calculated from the diagonal?

The width and height come from the diagonal and the screen shape. For a shape a:b, width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²), and height = diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²). This follows from the Pythagorean theorem, where diagonal² = width² + height².

For a 55 in screen at 16:9, √(16² + 9²) = √337 ≈ 18.36. So the width is 55 × 16 ÷ 18.36 ≈ 47.94 in, and the height is 55 × 9 ÷ 18.36 ≈ 26.96 in. Check the result: 47.94² + 26.96² ≈ 3,025, which equals 55². The area is width × height, or about 1,293 in².

Area grows with the square of the diagonal. A 55 in screen therefore has about 21% more area than a 50 in screen of the same shape, because (55 ÷ 50)² = 1.21. The same 55 in diagonal gives different shapes in other ratios: 50.55 × 21.67 in for 21:9, and 44 × 33 in for 4:3.

Why do published sizes for a 55 inch TV differ?

The figures on this page describe only the visible screen. Published sizes often describe something slightly different, and the two tables for 55 in differ from the screen-only calculation by up to about 1 in. A reference page’s rounded table lists 48.03 × 26.77 in for 16:9. A manufacturer’s approximate table lists 48.5 × 27.88 in, but does not state its basis. Both are shown next to the calculation, not averaged.

A TV maker’s support page says its listed size excludes the frame or bezel. A retailer’s spec note says the size excludes the bezel, casing and stand. A real set therefore has a larger outer size than the screen figures.

A “class” size can also be slightly smaller than its label. A retailer’s example gives a 55-class screen of about 54.6 in. A reference page says class sizes should be within 1/2 in of the actual size. The tool does not correct for this, so measure the diagonal if you need an exact figure.

Viewing-distance sources also differ. A TV maker’s guide suggests 1.2 times the screen size, while a manufacturer guide gives a range of 1.2 to 1.9 times. A projector maker’s help page uses a 36° viewing angle, and a third-party calculator gives a range of 26° to 40°. One commonly quoted table gives 1.0 times the diagonal for 40°, which does not match the geometry for 16:9, so this page does not use it.

Mounting height is another place where sources disagree. A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide put the screen center about 42 in above the floor, which puts the bottom edge of this screen at 28.52 in and the top edge at 55.48 in. A retailer’s table lists 61 in for 55 in screens, much higher than the 42 in rule. Both are shown, and neither is averaged.

Frequently asked questions

Is 55 inches the screen size or the whole TV size?

The 55 inch figure and the calculated width and height describe only the visible screen. The frame, bezel and stand are not included. Use “Bezel allowance (each side)” and “Extra width for stand or cabinet” to estimate a larger size.

How wide and tall is a 55 inch TV screen?

At 16:9 the visible screen is 47.94 in wide and 26.96 in high (121.8 × 68.49 cm). A reference page’s rounded table lists 48.03 × 26.77 in, and a manufacturer’s approximate table lists 48.5 × 27.88 in. The page shows all three side by side.

Why might a 55-class TV measure slightly under 55 inches?

A “class” size is a label, and the actual screen can be a little smaller. A retailer’s example gives about 54.6 in for a 55-class screen. Measure the diagonal yourself if you need a precise figure.

How far should I sit from a 55-inch TV?

Sources give different answers, and they are not averaged. A TV maker’s guide gives 1.2 times the screen size, or 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m). A manufacturer guide gives 1.2 to 1.9 times, or 5 ft 6 in to 8 ft 9 in (1.68 m to 2.65 m). Viewing angles of 40°, 36° and 26° give 5 ft 6 in, 6 ft 2 in and 8 ft 8 in.

At what height should a 55-inch TV be mounted?

A mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide use a screen center of 42 in from the floor, which gives a bottom edge of 28.52 in and a top edge of 55.48 in. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom. A retailer’s table lists 61 in for 55 in screens, which is much higher. All of these are shown.

How much bigger is a 55 inch screen than a 50 inch one?

It has about 21% more screen area, because area grows with the square of the diagonal. The “Compared with the previous size” row shows this.

Can this tool check whether a TV fits my cabinet?

No. It shows numbers calculated from the values you enter and does not say whether a TV will fit a space or a stand. Depth is not calculated, because it depends on the model, the stand or wall mount and the connections.
