How to use the 32 inch TV dimensions tool
- Look at the “TV size (diagonal)” box. It starts at 32 in. Type a different number if you are checking another size, and choose in, cm, mm or ft as the unit.
- Check “Screen shape (width:height)”. The default is 16:9. You can choose 21:9, 4:3 or 16:10, or pick a custom ratio and fill in “Shape, width part” and “Shape, height part”.
- Read the result rows. For the default settings you will see 27.89 × 15.69 in (70.84 × 39.85 cm) and a screen area of 437.6 in².
- If you want the outer size of the set, type a value in “Bezel allowance (each side)”. For example, 0.5 in on each side gives 28.89 × 16.69 in (73.38 × 42.39 cm). The “Outer size with your bezel allowance” row appears only when this value is above 0.
- Open “More options” and type your stand or cabinet width in “Extra width for stand or cabinet”. The row “Width to plan for (outer width + extra)” adds it to the outer width.
- Change “Screen shape (width:height)” to compare shapes. The same 32 in diagonal gives 29.41 × 12.61 in in 21:9 and 25.6 × 19.2 in in 4:3.
The presets save time. “32 in, 16:9” resets the default. “With 0.5 in bezel” applies the bezel example. “21:9, same diagonal” and “4:3, same diagonal” change only the shape. “Next size up: 40 in” loads the 40 in result, which is 34.86 × 19.61 in for 16:9 under the same settings.
How is the width and height of a 32 inch TV worked out?
The width and height come from the diagonal and the screen shape, using Pythagoras’ rule: the square of the diagonal equals the square of the width plus the square of the height. For a shape written as a:b, the calculation is width = diagonal × a ÷ √(a² + b²) and height = diagonal × b ÷ √(a² + b²). The area is then width × height.
For a 32 in diagonal in 16:9, the square root of 16² + 9² (337) is about 18.358. Multiplying 32 by 16 and dividing by 18.358 gives a width of 27.89 in. Multiplying 32 by 9 and dividing by 18.358 gives a height of 15.69 in. Converted to centimeters, that is 70.84 × 39.85 cm. The area is 437.6 in², which is 3.039 ft² or 0.2823 m².
The shape changes both sides. The same formula gives 29.41 × 12.61 in at 21:9 and 25.6 × 19.2 in at 4:3 for this 32 in diagonal.
Why can a 32 inch TV’s listed size differ from the screen size?
The numbers on this page cover only the visible screen. A TV maker’s support page says the listed size excludes the frame or bezel. A retailer’s guide says it also excludes the casing and stand. Real sets add a bezel and often a stand, and their sizes differ by maker and model, so the outer measurements are larger than the screen figures.
Some “class” sizes are also slightly smaller than their label. A retailer’s example gives a 55-class screen of about 54.6 in. One reference source says class sizes should be within 1/2 in of the actual size. The page states this as a warning but does not correct for it.
Sources also differ from each other. A reference table lists 27.95 × 15.75 in for 16:9 at this size, while the screen-only calculation gives 27.89 × 15.69 in. The page shows both figures and does not average them. Differences of up to about 1 in appear between some sources and the screen-only geometry.
Depth is not calculated, because it depends on the model, the stand or wall mount, and the connections. Measure the set and the space before you decide anything.

Frequently asked questions
What are the width and height of a 32 inch TV?
At 16:9, the screen is 27.89 in wide and 15.69 in high, or 70.84 × 39.85 cm. This is the visible screen only, calculated from the diagonal and the shape. The page lists these figures as the default result.
Does the 32 inch size include the bezel and stand?
No. A TV maker’s support page says the listed size excludes the bezel, and a retailer’s guide says it also excludes the casing and stand. Use the “Bezel allowance (each side)” control and the “Extra width for stand or cabinet” control to add your own estimates.
Why does the reference table show slightly different numbers?
A reference table gives 27.95 × 15.75 in for 16:9. The screen-only calculation gives 27.89 × 15.69 in. Both figures appear on the page, and the difference is not averaged. Sources can differ by up to about 1 in.
What viewing distance do sources give for a 32 inch TV?
A manufacturer’s guide gives 1.2 to 1.9 times the screen size, which is 3 ft 2 in to 5 ft 1 in (0.98 m to 1.54 m). A TV maker’s guide gives 1.2 times, or 3 ft 2 in (0.98 m). Angle-based rows are listed separately: 40 degrees gives 3 ft 2 in, 36 degrees gives 3 ft 7 in, and 26 degrees gives 5 ft 0 in.
What mounting height is listed for a 32 inch TV?
With the screen center at 42 in from the floor, a mount maker’s guide and a home-improvement guide give a bottom edge of 34.16 in and a top edge of 49.84 in for this screen. A tech-site guide lists 38, 40 and 42 in for low, regular and high mounts, and about 50 in for a bedroom. These are separate sources, not one recommendation.
Is the depth of a 32 inch TV calculated?
No. Depth depends on the model, the stand or wall mount, and the connections, so the page does not give a depth figure. Check the maker’s spec sheet for the set you own.
